The Erie Canalway Trail

The New York inland passage.

The fall colors are peaking in Upstate NY, and one of the best places to enjoy the scenery is along the Erie Canalway Trail.  The Rochester area—known as the Western Erie Region—features the longest section of the canal that still follows its original path and still reflects the historic relationship of the canal to the communities along its banks. Village Main Streets, lift bridges, historic locks, farms and cobblestone buildings add a touch of nostalgia to the journey.

The Erie Canalway Trail from Fairport to Brockport is a multi-use path, perfect for bike-riders, walkers, skaters, or an outing with the stroller. Entrances to the path and parking areas are found all along the canal and much of the way is paved with blacktop.  Several parks are adjacent to the canal (Genesee Valley Park and Buckman Park) and restaurants and shops are a short walk from the canal in the villages of Fairport, Pittsford, Spencerport and Brockport. Or, enjoy the view from the water and catch the last weeks of cruising the canal on the Mary Jemison or Sam Patch.
